Leroy J. Howard, MD, FACS was born and raised in Greenville, South Carolina. He graduated from The Citadel in Charleston, SC, served as a Graduate Research Assistant at Clemson (SC) University and obtained his Medical Degree from the Medical University of South Carolina. He interned at Greenville General Hospital (SC). After military service and a short time in Family Practice, he completed an Ophthalmology Residency at Geisinger Medical Center in Pennsylvania. Thereafter, Dr. Howard completed a Fellowship in Anterior Segment Surgery with Dr. Jess Lester, a renowned Ophthalmologist in a high volume surgical practice in Atlanta, Georgia. He was invited into the practice and spent some time there before returning home to Greenville. Dr. Howard served his country as a U.S. Army Flight Surgeon in Viet Nam and his decorations include the Bronze Star. Dr. Howard has practiced Ophthalmology in the Greenville area for over 30 years and continues to practice Comprehensive Medical Ophthalmology along with some laser procedures. Dr. Howard is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons. He is a member in good standing in numerous local, state and national Medical and Ophthalmology organizations. He served 2 terms on the Board of Directors of the South Carolina Society of Ophthalmology. Dr. Howard and his wife, Marie, live in Greenville where they are active in church, sports and cultural activities. They enjoy the symphony, travel, tennis and golf but, most of all, their family including their 3 grandsons.
